When was the last time you read Ephesians 2?
I read some blog posts about it last week and as it is one of my favorite passages (though really I love like every single passage in the whole book), I couldn’t stop thinking about it for days. Then, during worship on Sunday, it just kept bubbling up in my heart. I had to share my burden with my church family. And now I want to share it with you.
The truth of Ephesians 2 should transform our minds and hearts. It should captivate us. It should change how we view Jesus, how we love Jesus, how we worship Jesus. And it should change how we view ourselves, our salvation, and our lives now.
Here is the truth from verse 1:
Before Jesus we were dead.
Without Jesus we are dead.
We weren’t merely sick and needed a physician. We weren’t merely in bondage to sin and needing to be set free.
WE. WERE. DEAD.
From Dead to Alive
Jesus is LIFE itself (John 14:6). He created the world (Colossians 1:16 & John 1:3,10) – He breathed out life. He created life, because He IS Life. Life is only found in Him.
Death is the absence of life, just as darkness is the absence of light. The absence of Jesus therefore, is death. When did you last think about that?
“BUT GOD” starts verse 4 of Ephesians 2. One of the most beautiful and transforming phrases in scripture. “But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love… made us ALIVE together with Christ” (Eph 2:4-5 emphasis mine).
Yes, Jesus came to free us from sin and the penalty of hell. That is amazing and should make us eternally grateful. But Jesus came for more than to just free us from hell. He came to give us life. I’ve written about John 17:3 before. But in case you haven’t read it, Jesus explains what eternal life is in that verse. He says that eternal life is to know the Father and Jesus. The word ‘know’ is the Greek word ‘ginosko’. It is an experiential, relational knowledge. Eternal life is knowing Jesus and having a relationship with Jesus. Not just knowing facts about Him, but actually knowing Him as a person.
Are You Glad to Be Alive?
When did you last meditate on the truth that before Jesus, you were dead? You were a corpse: rotten, foul smelling, and could only bring death to whatever you touched. The thought should disgust and repulse you. BUT GOD made you alive together with Christ! You are now alive! You have Jesus! You have life! Jesus said that He came to give life and that more abundantly (John 10:10). You don’t just have life in Jesus, you have abundant life in Him!
Seriously, you should have just jumped out of your seat. Or whooped. Or cried. All would be appropriate responses.
Oh friend, please let this truth sink deep into your spirit.
If you don’t know Jesus and have not been brought to life in Him, study Ephesians 2:1-10. Cry out to Jesus, repent, seek Him, and trust in Him. He will answer you. He will bring to life your rotting corpse and breathe life into your non-beating heart. He will give you abundant life.
If you have been brought to life in Christ, then REJOICE! Remind yourself of this truth every day. Don’t wallow in the sin and decay of your old life and the world. Walk in faith and in truth. You. Are. Alive. In. Christ. I will say it again – rejoice! Respond to this passage with love, adoration, and gratefulness towards Jesus. This truth should overshadow anything you are going through right now and should transform your perspective. I know it has mine.
Keep seeking more of Jesus every day. He is so worth it.
Friends, I love you all and am praying for you as you walk the narrow way.
