Worldview is the set of ideas, values, and presuppositions through which you view the world. What? Well, it’s like putting on a pair of sunglasses that color everything you see. What kind of sunglasses do you wear? Everyone in the world wears a pair of sunglasses through which they view life, people, and ideas. Many people collect little pieces of their worldview over time through parents, school, movies, and friends. Biblical Worldview A Christian worldview is based on the Bible. The Bible reveals God’s heart and thoughts—the way He views the world. A wise person will try to line up his worldview with what the Bible has to say. Sometimes Christians don’t realize that their worldview is based more on secular ideas and morality instead of the Bible. The Bible speaks to all of life. The Bible speaks to every subject. Theology/ Who is God? What do you believe about God? Let me share with you what the Bible has to say. God Is. He exists. He has always existed. God is One and exists in Three Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God created everything that exists, seen and unseen, out of nothing. He spoke and it came to be. He is personally involved in His creation. His creation is accountable to Him. God is Holy. God is Love. Life is more than what we can see in the natural world. There is a supernatural realm that is unseen. Angels and demons wage war in that supernatural realm. Christians are seated with Christ in this heavenly realm. We please God with faith. We access grace through faith. Faith is a gift from God. Ethics/Morality What do you believe about God? Let me share with you what the Bible has to say. What do you believe about morality, ethics, and right/wrong? Let me share with you what the Bible has to say. God is Holy. He is absolutely perfect. He has ordained moral absolutes that are unchanging. He has revealed His morality through the written Word of God (the Bible) and written it on people’s hearts (Natural Law or conscience). “Lex Rex,” or Law is King means that everyone on the planet regardless of economic standing, political power, race, creed, or gender is accountable to God and His moral law. History What do you believe about history? Let me share with you what the Bible has to say. History is linear. It begins with Creation and moves forward with the Fall of Man and subsequent banishment from the Garden of Eden, the Flood, the Dispersal at the Tower of Babel, the Calling of Abraham and the Jewish Nation, the arrival of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, His Death, His Resurrection, His Ascension, and the Growth of His Glorious Church. History ends with Jesus’ Return and the New Heaven and New Earth. History has a purpose. God is intimately involved in history and causes nations to rise and fall. He raises up His own heroes in every generation. The Center of History is Jesus. All of history points forward to Him or back to Him. Science & Nature What do you believe about science and nature? Do you believe in evolution? Let me share with you what the Bible has to say. God is the Creator. He created all things in six days. Various kinds of plants and animals go back to that beginning. Though there is adaptation, no animal has changed from one kind to another kind. There are many types of dogs, descendants of the original dog in the Garden of Eden, but no dog ever became a cat. Nature reveals the glory of God and speaks to the heart of mankind so they are without excuse. God has Ownership, or Creation Rights, over all His Creation, including all living and nonliving things. Philosophy What do you believe about philosophy and the quest for truth? Let me share with you what the Bible has to say. God created reason and logic for men to observe, study, and experiment with the world around him. However, there are things that cannot be observed or measured which must be understood by faith. The Word of God is truth and reveals the truth we need to live our lives productively, successfully, and joyfully. Psychology/ Nature of Man What do you believe about psychology and the nature of man? Let me share with you what the Bible has to say. Men and women are created in the image of God so they are infinitely valuable. All human life is valuable. Murder is a horrible sin because of the high value God places on human life, made in the image of God. People are capable of incredibly heroic and altruistic deeds because of being made in the image of God. Men and women are also born with a sin nature until they are born again. This is called original sin. People are capable of terrible and dastardly deeds because of this sin nature. Apart from Christ, we are slaves to sin. Sociology/ How Society Should Look What do you believe about society and culture? Let me share with you what the Bible has to say. All authority on Heaven and on earth belongs to God. He delegates that authority to four realms: the individual, the family, the church, and the government. Individuals are accountable to God for their thoughts, beliefs, deeds, and words. The family is responsible for raising children and caring for the needs of one another, including extended family members. God’s nuclear family is a husband, wife, and children. The church is responsible to fulfill the Great Commission. The government of a sovereign nation is responsible to reward good and punish evil, as well as protect its own borders and people through the court system and military. Economics What do you believe about God? Let me share with you what the Bible has to say. What do you believe about economics, business, and money? Let me share with you what the Bible has to say. Everything belongs to God and He entrusts property to individuals. People are stewards, not direct owners. Stewardship means that we are accountable for every penny we spend and what we do with our property. God established private property and protected it with the commandment, “Thou shall not steal.” Individuals, families, and churches are called to give to the poor and needy. Law What do you believe about law and order? Let me share with you what the Bible has to say. Divine Law is revealed in the Scripture and can be used to govern individuals, families, governments, and the church. Natural law is written in man’s heart. It is sometimes called conscience. “Lex Rex,” or “Law is King” means that every person on the planet is accountable to God’s moral law. No one is exempt or above the law. Government What do you believe about government? Let me share with you what the Bible has to say. Government has authority from God to establish justice and protect God-given freedom. It does not have authority to usurp the role of the individual, family, or church. Government laws should be based on God’s moral laws revealed in the Bible. Why Does Worldview Matter? We live in a world that bombards us with lies that contradict the Word of God. It is important to know what the Bible teaches about every area of life so we can stand strong and honor God in how we live, vote, speak, spend our money, spend our time, and invest in the people we love. The next time you share your opinion about politics, money, or families, stop and ask yourself if what you believe lines up with Scripture. If it doesn’t, it’s time to spend more time in the Word of God so you can understand God’s heart on every issue. As homeschooling parents, we have the opportunity to teach our children from a Christian worldview. (More on that in my next blog.)
