We started homeschooling with a goal in mind. We had a reason to homeschool our children. We wanted to raise children who loved the Lord and were wholeheartedly committed to Him. With our reason for homeschooling, and really parenting in general, in mind, we wrote out measurable goals and taped them on the wall. They reminded us each day why we were homeschooling. Here our goals for our children: My Child will experience salvation through Jesus Christ and walk in assurance of that salvation all the days of his/her life. My Child will Love God & Enjoy Worshiping Him. My Child will Love, Understand, and Obey God's Word. My Child will Understand & Participate in the Power of Prayer. My Child will Know & Willingly Obey God's Rules of Right & Wrong. My Child will Walk with God, growing to Maturity. My Child will Know his/her Spiritual Gifts and Calling from God. My Child will be Able to Teach Spiritual Truths to Others. My Child will be an Effective Witness. My Child will Spend Daily Time with God. My Child will have a Servant's Heart. My Child will be Self-Disciplined. My Child will be in Fellowship and Committed to a Local Church. My Child will be Prepared to Court, Marry, and Parent. With these goals in mind, we planned each school year, chose curriculum, and structured learning experiences to introduce them to the great joy of walking with Jesus Christ. Did we blow it? YES! Every day it seemed. Yet, we pressed on. We prayed, loved, taught, explained, wiped away tears, cried our own, laughed, joked, sang, and persevered. Goals won't, in and of themselves, produce godly children, but they will give you a direction to aim towards with your plans and teaching. I am grateful that my children love Jesus and are serving Him with all their hearts. In His mercy, our goals, posted on the wall when the oldest children were still in diapers, have come to pass. God is good! What about you? What are your goals? Are those goals in front of you day after day? It makes a difference in how you homeschool and parent!
