Micah, who is fascinated with anything related to firemen and firetrucks, turned 5 recently. Naturally, his parents had a firefighter-themed birthday party. A red tablecloth with fighter-fighter toys like a plastic firetruck and ax heralded the theme for all the visitors. The simple snacks and drinks were under a large tree on top of a firefighter-themed tablecloth. Games adhered to the theme, too. My husband and I enjoyed the party. We chatted with friends and watched the children laugh and play. As the little ones arrived, their eyes brightened with delight as they saw the decorations. They got so excited as they played the games together. I was so impressed with Micah's fireman party that I just had to tell you all about it and how Sarah did it at such a low cost. Theme & Decorations & FoodOne of the things Mommy Sarah did was purchase some fire hydrant clings. She put these up on walls, the fence, and furniture. Later the children collected all the clings they could find as part of a game. Decorations were simple, using toys from Micah's toy box. The birthday banner comes out every year for each child's birthday. The only expense was two fire-fighter-themed tablecloths, one red tablecloth, little flames for a game, and goodies for the goodie bag. Even the goodie bags were kept simple with bubbles and small pieces of candy. Sarah is learning to decorate cakes, so she baked a 2-layer cake and decorated it herself with frosting to make a road and grass. Then she added a small plastic fire house and 3 firemen. For a little bit of money, the firefighter theme was evident to all. The real key to it was using toys like a fire trucks, plastic fire ax, and bright red fire hats she saved from a field trip where they were given out free. Each game had a fire-fighter theme, too. Find The Fire Hydrant ClingsRemember I mentioned the firefighter clings. Well, the first game, enjoyed by toddlers and preschoolers, was to find all the fire hydrant clings. All the children rushed around the back yard looking for these little red clings. The Box GameThe box game requires, you got it, several boxes. Each box is wrapped and put inside another box that is wrapped and so on. When it's time to play the wrapped box contained several other wrapped boxes inside is place in the middle of the floor. Dice are given to the first child who rolls them and passes them to the next child who rolls them and passes them to the next child. This continues until someone rolls doubles, in which case, they run to the center of the room and put on the fire coat and hat. Then they start unwrapped the box as fast as they can. Meanwhile, the other children continue to roll the dice. When the next child gets doubles, she runs up and takes the coat and hat from the first child until the next child rolls doubles. The game continues until all the boxes are unwrapped. This is a loud fun game with lots of cheering. Squirt The Fire Out GameCardboard flames from the Dollar Store are taped to plastic red Solo cups and place on the edge of a table. On the other side of the table, children with water pistols try to "Put the Flame Out!" by shooting water at it until the cup falls over off the table. This is another fun, loud game with lots of cheering. After the games were over, it was time for presents and cake with ice cream. Micah had a great time thanks to his mother's creativity in planning a special birthday party based on his current interest in firefighting, as well as both his parents' fantastic ability to lead the children in fun, fun, fun!
