I have been thinking about getting my master's degree, but what holds me back is taking the GRE because of that pesky math. Math Essentials had the answer for me when they asked me to review Math Refresher for Adults, a workbook for adults who want to remember all that math of long ago. I love it! Don't get me wrong, I loved math, but over the years, the memories of equations and methods are murky. I was so excited to get my hands on Math Refresher for Adults because I also lead a homeschool co-op and this was thrilling to me. Why? Well, my homeschool co-op is filled with Moms who are TERRIFIED of math. It's not just that they don't remember it--they hate it! I can only imagine that their experience with math has been negative. Unfortunately, they have passed this on to their children who avoid doing their math like the plague. Was this a piece of the puzzle for moms in this situation? I was eager to find out. I was embarrassed when I began the workbook because I made so many little errors that gave me a wrong answer. I was reminded of the advice I always give my children: Check your work! However, once I got into the groove of the book, I felt myself remembering and if I didn't remember, there were simple little lessons reminding me along the way. The workbook covered the basics of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percents, integers, charts, graphs, and word problems. Math Refresher for Adults also covered the number one problems I run into with teens who are struggling with Algebra II: Decimals and Fractions. The review lessons were clear and easy-to-understand. The book also cover topics in geometry: points, lines, planes, intersecting lines, angles, polygons, circumference, area, perimeter, and more. The algebra review section brings us back to exponents, square roots, rations, proportions, slope, graphing linear equations, probability, and statistics. As you can see, there is a lot covered in this book. I heartily recommend this book to every mom out there who feels intimidated and overwhelmed by math. Do two pages a day in this book for 4 months and you will feel encouraged and confident. It is one great refresher for us moms who have to teach math and aren't quite sure we want to.
