One thing we can't ignore during the teenage years is the impact hormones have on our teens. Our sons struggle with anger, sometimes excessive. Our daughters struggle with a wide range of emotions ranging from tears to giggles. The excessive mood swings in our beloveds are caused by fluctuations in estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. Whew! Say those words ten times fast! Adolescent boys produce ten times more testosterone! Have you ever seen the rage of an addict on steroids? Maybe your teenage son is more self-controlled than you give him credit for. At the beginning of puberty, the pituitary gland swings into action releasing Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH). In boys, these hormones tell the testes to produce Testosterone and sperm. In girls, FSH and LH tell the ovaries to produce estrogen and eggs. Other changes happen. Guys and girls put on weight and muscle mass. They grow taller. Girls' hips grow wider, breasts develop, and the menstrual cycle starts. Boys sex organs grow and they are able to ejaculate (release sperm). Both guys and girls grow body hair on legs, under arms, and over sex organs. Both guys and girls develop stronger body odor. Both guys and girls tend to develop acne due to increased oil production in the skin glands. Welcome to puberty! Teens have to cope with romantic feels and new sexual urges. I remember one young friend entering puberty during adolescence. He was shopping at the mall with his mom and they passed the Victoria's Secret store. He was filled with lust and had no idea why. He felt so dirty and like such a failure. We have to prepare our sons and daughters for the sexual feelings that accompany puberty. Otherwise, there is so much damage the lies of the devil and the world can do to our children. Because of their new sexual urges, they have a million questions about sex. Be the one they talk to so they don't go online and google words like 'naked' and 'sex'. Often they feel like a weirdo or freak because they get turned on so easily. It is quite embarrassing for many teens. Allow them to talk to you about their new sexual desires and help them to handle them with the help of the Lord. Remind them that they are normal. Everyone else goes through the same thing. And remind them that their hormone levels will calm done and level out. And listen, listen, listen. If you haven't already (I hope you have), have a frank talk with your children about sex, body changes, and how babies are made. Explain that the Lord has called us to sexual purity, to enjoy sex within a committed marriage relationship only. It may help to explain the fruit of not obeying that command: broken hearts, babies born outside wedlock, and sexually transmitted diseases. Discuss dating, courtship, and marriage with your teens. Talk to them about what they want for their future marriage and in a spouse. Write it down. Rationality can fly out the window when romantic and sexual feelings are stirred up. Pray together with and for your teen regularly as they go through this challenge of hormones and changes. God is with them and you! One thing we do is memorize I Thessalonians 4:1-12 together and recite it often, as well as pray it over our children. It contains many great verses to quote when you are tempted to indulge in any form of sexual sin. This passage was one I memorized in college and was a blessing! As parents, my husband and I created Bible Studies and Life Skills course for our teenagers to teach them God's tender ways, to equip them to say "NO!" to sin and "YES!" to Jesus.
